Kept away from the main communication routes for a long time, this unspoiled corner of Maremma is today a unique place in the world. It will fascinate you with the quiet and the beauty of its landscapes and with its ancient medieval villages, vertically built onto a tuff cliff, surrounded by centuries-old trees and deep valleys crossed by several streams and extremely rich in history and traditions.
Arrival, meet & greet in Sorano.
Passing through the narrow streets of San Quirico di Sorano, you will get to Vitozza, a lost rupestrian village where you can admire the caves and the ruins of what was once a city built on tuff.
After about 2-3 hours of excursion, you will move towards Sorano: when belonging to the aristocratic family of Aldobrandeschi, the village was fortified by bastions that still protect the town today. At the top of the volcanic tuff cliff stands a fortress, the Fortezza Orsini, an imposing fortification that dates back to 1552, from where one can enjoy a special view over the whole village, while the basement is a real labyrinth of tunnels. Near the fortress stands the Masso Leopoldino.
This area is also known for the thermal water, which springs at a temperature of 37.5 ° and whose benefits were known since the Middle Ages.
Hotel accommodation and overnight.
After breakfast, you will leave for Pitigliano, an amazing typical village perched on a tuff spur. Its origins are very ancient and go back to the Etruscan period.
Do not miss a visit to the Jewish quarter: starting from the 16th Century, in fact, a large Jewish community settled here and over the time acquired a very important role in the city, that was nicknamed “The Little Jerusalem”.
Wine tasting in a cellar.
Return to the hotel and overnight.
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Sovana, an ancient small town where you can admire the Cathedral of San Pietro, the Church of Santa Maria, Piazza del Pretorio and the rich Etruscan Necropolis that surrounds the town: all this archaeological area, named “Vie Cave”, still preserves some of the most important monumental rock tombs of Etruria and shows Etruscan engineers’ undisputed art and mastery in carving and shaping volcanic rock. These spectacular routes pass through rocky walls up to 20 meters high and were used as a safe road network between the several settlements of the area.
Return to the hotel and overnight.
Breakfast at the hotel.
Today you can stop in Manciano and Montemerano, two Medieval villages with a thousand-year history. Do not miss a swim in the “Gorello Waterfalls“, better known as the thermal springs of Saturnia: over the years the power of the sulphurous waterfalls has dug the travertine rock, creating spectacular natural pools.
